03.20.26 Mountain Jay (on hold for 43rd All Colorado Exhibit)

$2,400.00

A framed 30×20-inch oil on panel. Dated March 2026.

Springtime: On this brilliant day in the mountains, the sharp, distinct cry of a Mountain Jay pierces the stillness of the idyllic scene. A small clump of snow falls from the branch it perches upon. The lower, snow-laden boughs receive the clump, causing them to release their loads upon a hanging cornice, which in turn crumbles under the additional weight and falls, loosening an unstable sheet of ice and snow thirty feet below. Silence…and then a low muffled groan spreads across the slope. A sharp crack echoes across the mountain. A massive avalanche thunders into the depths below. A crystalline cloud of powder hisses through the valley, soon replaced by a deathly silence.

The Mountain Jay blinks. “Chirp!”

Sometimes Nature reminds us it has a truly complicated sense of humor.
