This painting is one of a series themed on chronological scenarios comparing geographic locations undergoing oceanic and atmospheric changes over great spans of time, typically measured in hundreds of millions of years. These “snapshots in time” are then superimposed upon themselves as visual overlays.
In this instance an ancient sea - amplified by a high spring tide - rages above snow-covered mountains of the present-day continental divide. Towering breakers loom over the seemingly impregnable mass of granite and basalt. Time and water flow on. Mountains recede into the depths and then rise again as the sea becomes desert in a sort of “rinse and repeat” event.
