This painting is one of a series I am calling, Thinking Forward-Looking Back, that reflect upon chronological scenarios comparing geographic locations undergoing oceanic and atmospheric changes over great spans of time as measured by the tiny metric of human existence, and then superimposing these snapshots over themselves as visual overlays.
Here in the mountains of the American West, evidence of oceanic life can be found at elevations miles above current ocean levels, evidence of vast oceanic bodies that filled geologic rifts. This is the time marker that is my point of reference. The title suggests some perilous surprise, an appropriate response when encountering a massive ocean wave breaking over a snowy peak.
