Unlike the title might suggest, the main point of interest in this painting is actually the cloud towering above the mesa. However, I must give due recognition to the red mesa itself. Placing a large earth structure in the foreground, in addition to imparting dark contrast, also gives the cloud scale; its enormity would otherwise have been lost. The dark red of the mesa also compliments the ethereal cool colors of cloud.
