Pelican Shoals
A 24×36-inch oil on panel
A scene painted from memory: Pelican Shoals lies miles off Cumberland Island, Georgia. At high tide it is not easily seen, which makes it a serious navigation hazard. Around twenty years ago, while sailing alone, I carelessly ran aground there. I anxiously waited for the tide to rise so that I might float free. As I waited, a tremendous thunderstorm grew offshore. In time the storm passed to the east, and the tide lifted my boat from the shoal.
